About the Region
British Columbia is a huge province on the west coast of Canada. Despite of all that space, Vancouver and the Lower Mainland is the most densely populated area. The whole Vancouver region is quite extraordinary so if you chose to just visit this part of our province, you will not be disappointed.
Vancouver, of course, dominates this region in terms of being the Biggest and Brightest of all the towns, municipalities and other cities in the region. Travellers have been known to say “It has it all!” and rivals the likes of international cosmopolitan centers like Hong Kong, L.A., London and New York. Where else can you experience seaside fine dining while watching a Bald Eagle swoop down and take a small fish off the surface of the water? Nature is inseparable from city life of Vancouver. Beaches, walking trails, parks, mountain views and the mighty Fraser River all work in harmony to help shape our relationship to our environment. The city’s beloved 1000 acre Stanley Park feels like it’s a world away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown core while only 2 kilometers or so from city center. While nature plays a significant role in a Vancouverites life, so does its cultural scene. It’s home to as many festivals as you can imagine; the Public Dreams Lantern Festival in July, the Bard on the Beach festival that runs all summer and the annual Folk Festival to mention a few. The University of BC’s Museum of Anthropology is a must see, as is the Vancouver Museum at the Vancouver Planetarium. There is Science World for children and adults alike as the fun of just wandering around Gastown, the city’s original downtown core. This amazing city is home to a striking architecture of glass juxtaposed against the heritage architecture of districts like Gastown, Yaletown and the lower eastside.
Geographically many of the Lower Mainland‘s towns and cities have been shaped by the Fraser River and the rich farmland of the Fraser Valley. Day trips from Vancouver can be had to all sorts of places throughout the valley with ease. Fort Langley, a historical National Park site depicting the original Fort and the first communities life and culture is only an hour southeast. Other points of interest are Harrison Hot Springs, which is tucked onto Harrison Lake only 90 minutes from Vancouver, or a seaside stroll on the shores of Boundary Bay in the seaside town of White Rock.
Vancouver offers something for everyone and it is a great family destination. Vancouver and the Lower Mainland is a region alive with cultural diversity, multi-ethnicity, unique architectural structures, friendly locals, and of course breath-taking vistas.
