About the Region
Stretching Northward 185 km, the Sunshine Coast is a secluded stretch of Pacific Coastline that offers the traveler year round recreations and a truly Ocean to Mountain experience.
Hugging the Pacific Coast Mountain Range, the Sunshine Coast finds itself bordered by ocean, deep mystic fjords, lakes and snow capped Mountain peaks. With Howe Sound to the South, Desolation Sound to the North and Jervis Inlet dividing this section of BC’s coast into north and south, the apparent isolation has created an energetic cultural landscape.
The Sunshine Coast lives up to its name experiencing anywhere from 1400-2400 hours of sunshine per year. That’s 4-6 hrs per day. Similar to the Gulf Islands, the sunshine coast benefits from a rain shadow created by Vancouver Island making it a popular destination.
With outdoor activities all year round like hiking, swimming, fishing, sailing and boating coupled with seasonal activities such as cross country skiing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing on the coast mountain range, it is a wonderful place to consider any time of the year.
What else makes this region of BC unique are the towns and villages which are connected by the one main road, Hwy 101. This highway happens to be a section of the world’s longest Highway… the Pan American Hwy stretching from Castro in the south of Chile to the Village of Lund at the North end of the Sunshine coast. The three main towns are Gibsons, Sechelt and Powell River all of which are closely related to the maritime and lumbering history of BC’s coast. In these small seaside towns, you will find a wide range of modern amenities including restaurants, pubs, shops, galleries and marinas. While the smaller villages like Roberts Creek, Lund and Halfmoon Bay do not have a bustling downtown, they do offer amenities and a close connection to the regions heritage. Lund, at the north end of the Sunshine Coast, is a perfect example of this. Lund is tucked into a small sheltered bay and has been servicing coastal travelers since two Swedish brothers Charles and Fredrick Thulin opened their hotel in 1895.
