About the Region
The Kootenays are a journey unto themselves. This region of British Columbia is defined by high rugged mountains, steep valleys, historic rivers and pristine lakes. It is a region that offers endless photographic opportunities with wildlife, water, forest and vale not to mention ghost towns and a rich pioneering history of which only pictures can truly capture.
This region of BC is a constant reminder that nature is our true master and that humanity can often only standby and watch in awe. Much untouched wilderness lies in this region of BC which is protected by a series of large National and Provincial parks. Outdoor recreation opportunities are abundant here to help you satisfy your need for nature. The Kokanee Glacier Park, the Cody Caves, Upper and Lower Arrow Lakes, Kootenay Lake and the Slocan Lakes all contribute to the majesty of this region. To the east, the Bugaboo Mountains and the Rocky Mountains define the region.
Towns, cities and villages such as Nelson, New Denver, Kaslo, Kimberly and Cranbrook make the area civilized and cultured. The city of Nelson, perched on a hillside, was the sister city of San Francisco in its early days complete with street cars. This city has a bustling downtown with plenty of heritage buildings, unique shops, restaurants and galleries. Nelson is home to a significant Art school in British Columbia so there are always interesting performances and art shows to take in.
If you are looking for a ski vacation that is more boutique, try skiing at Red Mountain or Whitewater outside Nelson. Other ski destinations are abundant in the Kootenays with towns like Kimberly, Fernie and Panorama Ski Hill outside the town of Invermere.
Another amazing fact about the Kootenays is the abundance of Hot Springs. Throughout this region, you will find the relaxing and invigorating waters of Radium Hotsprings, Fairmont Hotsprings and Halycon Hotsprings, just to name a few. If you are really serious about hot springs, there are a number of undeveloped hot springs which you have to come to know through local knowledge. The people in this region are quite friendly so asking someone will usually get you directions and some guidance as to how best to enjoy them.
